Staff FAQ

How old do I need to be to work at Rock Springs?
Applicants need to have graduated from high school and be at least 17 years of age.  College students are preferred.  Rock Springs adheres to ACA standards for staff hiring.  Summer staff range in age with many 20 and older. 

What kind of experience do I need to apply?
We will train everyone in our various positions at camp. Experience working with youth is preferred but not required.  There are some positions that require more experience than others. For example horses and lifeguarding are areas that prior experience is necessary. 

Why should I work at Rock Springs?

Rock Springs offers invaluable skills that can't be found in a traditional summer job. Regardless of your college major, working at camp allows you to learn and develop skills that will enhance your job marketablity. On top of this great opportunity, you are making a difference in young lives. Your're shaping the future generation with new life experiences and skill sets. The pay is pretty awesome as well. You're payed to live, play and work in the great outdoors. You earn a base salary for the summer and when you add the camp amenities inot the mix your're making bank. At camp there is no rent, no grocery bills, low gas bills which saves you an average $700-$1,000 per month.

Do I need any special certifications to work at Rock Springs?
All Summer staff will be trained in American Red Cross CPR and 1st Aid. Lifeguards will be certified in American Red Cross in Lifeguarding, CPR-PR and First Aid. If your certifications are current through the end of summer then you will be opted out of this training.  

What’s a typical workday like?
While every group that uses our facility is different at Rock Springs there are some similarities. 
6:30 am                     Workday starts for Barn Staff
7:45 am                     Breakfast – staff announcements
9:00 am                     Workday starts for all staff
12:15 pm                   Lunch
1:00 pm                     Workday for all staff
6:30 pm                     Dinner
7:30 - 9:00 pm           Evening Programs for campers

How do you pick days off?
Days off will be assigned to you and will be listed on your employment agreement form. There will be an opportunity to talk about days off in the interview.

Do you allow additional days off?

Yes, but there are exceptions.  June is our main camping month so additional time off is very limited.  July offers a little bit more flexibility in additional time off and can be requested beforehand. We need a 2 week advance notice of any additional time off for the summer.

Can I bring my pet with me to camp?

No, summer staff cannot bring pets to Rock Springs.  Additionally, critters caught at camp cannot be kept as pets. 

Where do I live if I work at camp?
Summer housing is provided to all summer staff employed at Rock Springs.  Housing is similar to dorm room styles.  Typically each room has 2 bunk beds, a common area and a bathroom. You will share a room with 1-3 other summer staff employees. Housing is provided as part of your employment compensation.

Do I have to cook my own food?
No, Rock Springs will provide you with breakfast, lunch and dinner through your employment contract dates.  There is a small kitchenette with a refrigerator and microwave that is provided for the summer staff to use as well.  There are times that the staff will go to town for dinner and we ask that you let the administrator know in advance so the kitchen can prepare the right amount of food.  Meals are provided as part of your employment compensation.

Do I get any time off while working at camp?
Summer staff get one day off per week. Your day off will be assigned to you via your employment agreement.  

When do I get paid?
Staff will be paid every two weeks. Paychecks will be direct deposited into your personal bank account, if you don't have a bank account then you'll be paid through a payroll card.

Where do I do laundry?
Rock Springs has a staff laundry facility on site.  The laundry is free of charge and is part of your monthly compensation.

Do I need a car?
Not really, we hire about 50 summer staff members and driving is only allowed on time off.  Several people run into town and you can usually catch a ride with a fellow staff member.  Cars must be registered with Rock Springs at the start of summer and must be parked in designated summer staff parking lots.  Bicycles are allowed on camp.

Will I have email access and cell phone coverage?
Rock Springs has several buildings with Wi-Fi connections but doesn’t have a staff computer.  Laptops and tablets are allowed but you bring them at your own risk.  Cell phone coverage is very spotty out here.  Cell phones are not allowed during working hours and must be kept in your room or car.  You can use your phone on scheduled breaks or during non-working hours. 

I was on the staff in the past.  What do I have to do to be on the staff this summer?
Everyone interested in being a part of the Rock Springs staff must apply every summer.  Returning staff should complete the Rock Springs Reapplication.
